Russ Crupnick’s NPD Group were at it once again during NARM with facts and figures that seem to belie conventional wisdom. According to the latest findings, radio, not Facebook and/or social media, is still the biggest influence on new music discovery. Crupnick asked “highly engaged” music fans a fairly simple question: “How did you first hear about (whatever song) you wanted to hear again?” The results find 38% of respondents answering, “on traditional AM/FM radio,” followed by “friend played/sent/gave (13%), TV show/ award show (13%), YouTube/VEVO/video site (12%), free online radio (6%) and saw/heard on social media site (2-3%). Adam Yauch, one-third of the pioneering hip-hop group the Beastie Boys, has died at the age of 47, Rolling Stone has learned. Yauch, also known as MCA, had been in treatment for cancer since 2009. The rapper was diagnosed in 2009 after discovering a tumor in his salivary gland.
“It is with great sadness that we confirm that musician, rapper, activist and director Adam ‘MCA’ Yauch, founding member of Beastie Boys and also of the Milarepa Foundation that produced the Tibetan Freedom Concert benefits, and film production and distribution company Oscilloscope Laboratories, passed away in his native New York City this morning after a near-three-year battle with cancer,” reads an official statement from the Beastie Boys. “He was 47 years old.”

We here at Frontside are very pleased to announced that eight of the artists we work with have combined for a total of eleven nominations in eight categories at the 2012 JUNO awards, to be held in Ottawa on April 1st.
Most notable are the double nominations in the New Artist Of The Year, New Group Of The Year and Rock Album Of The Year categories. Frontside has always placed a significant amount of focus on developing new talent and we’re very proud to see the dedicated artists, labels and managers that we work with recognized at the highest level.
Of course, the sentiment of congratulations goes out across the board to all of the nominees and their associated teams. The list truly reads like a who’s who of the global music scene. Canada clearly has a voice on an international scale, and that’s something to be proud of.
